Insulation for Both Seasons
Spray foam insulation in Cullman has to work in summer and winter. Wikipedia describes the climate as humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters, and the city sits at 814 feet on the Brindley Mountain plateau. Air conditioning runs hard from May to September, and the heat runs through the cold months. A house that leaks air at the attic and the crawl space loses money both ways. We are spray foam insulation contractors who seal those leaks and insulate the spaces that need it, with foam where it pays and blown-in insulation where it does the job for less.
What the code asks for here
Cullman County is in IECC climate zone 3A. Alabama adopted the 2015 IECC with state amendments on October 1, 2016, and Alabama's amended code, as summarized by Southface's Alabama field guide and the Insulation Institute, lists these zone 3 values: R-30 ceilings, R-20 or R-13 plus R-5 continuous for wood-frame walls, R-19 floors, and R-13 (or R-5 continuous) on crawl space and basement walls. For existing homes, the Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated zone 3 attic, adding R-38 to R-49 on top of 3 to 4 inches, and R-19 for an uninsulated floor.
Where Cullman houses lose comfort
Many homes in the county are ranches on crawl spaces, built with modest attic insulation and floors that were either never insulated or have batts falling out. In summer, a vented crawl space pulls in humid air that condenses on cool ducts and floor framing. In winter, the same open crawl space makes floors cold. In the attic, gaps around lights, fans, pipes and the hatch let conditioned air escape, and settled fill lets heat through. Fixing the attic and the crawl space together is usually the biggest step.
Closed cell vs open cell
Open-cell foam is soft and light, expands a lot and seals air well, at about R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch per HomeGuide. Closed-cell foam is dense and rigid, about R-5 to R-7 per inch, and at normal thickness slows water vapor and does not soak up water. In Cullman, closed-cell is our pick for crawl space walls, rim joists, the underside of floors, and steel barns and shops. Open-cell is common under roof decks and in interior or above-grade walls. On an open attic floor, sealing and then blowing loose fill usually costs less than foam.
Barns, poultry houses and shops
Cullman County is farm country, and steel buildings are everywhere: pole barns, equipment sheds, shops and poultry houses. Bare steel sweats whenever humid air touches it, and drips onto whatever is underneath. Closed-cell foam on the steel insulates and stops that drip in one step. We size the thickness to what you do in the building.
Tornado country
An EF4 tornado tore through downtown Cullman on April 27, 2011, during the Super Outbreak. Storm damage to roofs lets water into attics, and wet insulation loses its value. If your roof has been repaired, we check that the insulation under it is dry and complete.
Spray foam insulation cost
HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts installed spray foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot: about $1.50 to $3.50 for open-cell and $3.00 to $5.00 for closed-cell. About 1,000 square feet runs $1,500 to $5,000, and many spray foam insulation companies set a job minimum of $1,000 to $2,000 or more. Fixr lists $3.15 to $7.50 per square foot for existing walls. These are national figures. Access, thickness, building height and old material removal move the number, and the figure on your written estimate is the one you pay.
Questions to ask insulation contractors
Whether you search for spray foam insulation near me or ask around town, ask any insulation company the same questions. What will you seal first? Which foam goes where, and at what thickness and R-value? How will you handle the crawl space vents and the attic ventilation? How long should we stay out after spraying? HomeGuide's guidance is at least 24 hours. Is the price written per area? We answer all of those on the quote.

Common Questions
How much does it cost to spray foam a house in Cullman?
HomeGuide lists installed spray foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot and a whole house at $8,000 to $20,000. Most jobs are smaller, like an attic or a crawl space. We give you a written price after a visit.
What are the downsides of closed-cell spray foam?
It costs more than open-cell or loose fill, it is hard to remove later, and it can hide leaks or rot if those are not fixed first. Its strengths are high R-value per inch and water resistance, which is why we use it in crawl spaces and on steel.
What R-value does a Cullman attic need?
Alabama's code summary lists R-30 for ceilings in zone 3. The DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated attic, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.
Should I encapsulate my crawl space?
If it is damp, musty or has sweating ducts, often yes. If it is dry, a ground liner and good floor insulation may be enough. We crawl it and tell you.
Can you insulate a poultry house or barn?
Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel is the usual approach to stop condensation and cut heat. We size the thickness to the building's use.
