Depth for Less
Blown-in insulation is the lower-cost way to add depth to an attic or fill closed walls. Loose cellulose or fiberglass is blown across the attic floor or packed into wall cavities. In many Cullman homes, sealing the attic floor and blowing to depth gets most of the benefit of foam for less money.
Seal before you blow
Loose fill slows heat but does not stop air. Before blowing, we seal the gaps in the attic floor: top plates, pipe and wire holes, recessed lights, fans, chases and the hatch. Skipping this step leaves the biggest leaks in place.
Depth for zone 3
Alabama's code summary lists R-30 for ceilings in zone 3. The Department of Energy suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated attic, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches. We write the target R-value and depth, and leave depth markers so you can check.
Cellulose or fiberglass
Cellulose is recycled paper treated for fire and pests. It is dense and slows air movement somewhat. Fiberglass is lighter and does not absorb water the same way. Fixr lists fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80. Either works in a dry, vented attic; we recommend one based on your attic and explain why.
Walls: dense-pack
Closed walls in older homes can be filled by drilling small holes and blowing cellulose in at high density. HomeGuide lists dense-pack at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot. Old wiring and blocking affect the plan, so we check first.
Ventilation
Blown-in attics stay vented. We baffle the eaves so fill does not block the soffit vents. Get a free estimate
Cost
HomeGuide lists blown-in at $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot and a typical attic at $900 to $3,600. Fixr lists $1,750 to $5,500 for about 1,500 square feet of attic. Depth, access and sealing change the final number.

Blown-In Insulation Questions
Is blown-in or spray foam better for my attic?
If ducts or equipment are in the attic, foam on the roof deck may be worth it. Otherwise, sealing and blowing in usually gives more for the money.
Will blown-in insulation settle?
A little. We blow to the settled depth needed for the target R-value.
Does cellulose attract mice?
It is treated for pests, but rodents nest in any insulation if they can get in. Close entry points first.
How long does blown-in take?
Most attics take a day, including sealing.
Can blown-in go over old fiberglass batts?
Yes, if the batts are dry and clean.
Is blown-in good for walls?
Dense-pack cellulose is a good retrofit for closed walls. Loose blowing into walls can settle, so it must be packed.
