Frequently Asked Questions

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much does it cost to spray foam a house in Cullman?

HomeGuide lists installed spray foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot and a whole house at $8,000 to $20,000. Most jobs are smaller, like an attic or a crawl space. We give you a written price after a visit.

What are the downsides of closed-cell spray foam?

It costs more than open-cell or loose fill, it is hard to remove later, and it can hide leaks or rot if those are not fixed first. Its strengths are high R-value per inch and water resistance, which is why we use it in crawl spaces and on steel.

What R-value does a Cullman attic need?

Alabama's code summary lists R-30 for ceilings in zone 3. The DOE suggests R-49 to R-60 for an uninsulated attic, or adding R-38 to R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.

Should I encapsulate my crawl space?

If it is damp, musty or has sweating ducts, often yes. If it is dry, a ground liner and good floor insulation may be enough. We crawl it and tell you.

Can you insulate a poultry house or barn?

Yes. Closed-cell foam on the steel is the usual approach to stop condensation and cut heat. We size the thickness to the building's use.

Are there rebates for insulation in Cullman County?

A 2024 Cullman Tribune article says Cullman Electric Cooperative members can find TVA EnergyRight rebates for insulation and air sealing. Check current rules with your utility.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions

How much does closed-cell spray foam cost per square foot?

HomeGuide lists closed-cell at $3.00 to $5.00 per square foot installed at common thicknesses. Thicker foam costs more. We write the thickness and price on the quote.

Is closed-cell worth it in a crawl space?

Usually yes, because it does not soak up water and slows vapor. Open-cell is not a good choice in a damp crawl space.

Can spray foam be installed in winter?

Yes in heated spaces. Cold crawl spaces, attics and barns need the surface and foam within a working temperature range, so we add heat or pick a milder day.

Does spray foam stop moisture?

Closed-cell slows vapor and keeps humid air off cold surfaces. It is not waterproofing and does not fix leaks.

Attic Insulation Questions

What is the attic insulation code in Alabama?

Alabama adopted the 2015 IECC with state amendments. Alabama's amended code lists R-30 for ceilings in zone 3, which includes Cullman County.

Can new insulation go over old?

Yes, if the old material is dry and clean. Wet, moldy, rodent-fouled or suspected vermiculite material should come out first.

How long does attic insulation take?

Most attics are sealed and blown in a day.

Will more insulation help in winter too?

Yes. The same insulation that blocks summer heat holds winter heat in.

Do recessed lights need special treatment?

Lights not rated for insulation contact need covers or clearance. We check each one before blowing in.

Crawl Space Encapsulation & Insulation Questions

Is crawl space encapsulation worth it in Alabama?

For damp crawl spaces with musty smells or sweating ducts, usually yes. For dry ones, a liner and good floor insulation may be enough.

What R-value should my floor have?

Alabama's code summary and the DOE both list R-19 for floors in zone 3.

Do I need a dehumidifier after encapsulation?

Usually some form of humidity control. We explain the options on the quote.

Will my floors be warmer in winter?

Yes. Either insulating the floor or sealing and insulating the crawl space walls warms the floor above.

Can you insulate a crawl space with low clearance?

Often, depending on access. Very tight spaces may need a different approach, which we explain after looking.

Pole Barn & Farm Building Insulation Questions

How thick should foam be on a pole barn?

Often 1 inch or so of closed-cell stops drip; 2 to 3 inches or more for a shop you heat or cool. We write the thickness on the quote.

Can you foam over old insulation in a barn?

Not over loose or torn batts. Those come out so the foam bonds to steel.

Will foam keep birds and wasps out?

Sealing gaps at seams and eaves helps, but open doors and vents will still let them in.

Can you work around livestock or birds?

Foam needs the area cleared and ventilated. We plan timing with you, such as between flocks.

Does foam need a coating in a barn?

In some uses a protective or fire-rated coating is recommended or required. We tell you if your building needs one and include it as a separate line.

Blown-In Insulation Questions

Is blown-in or spray foam better for my attic?

If ducts or equipment are in the attic, foam on the roof deck may be worth it. Otherwise, sealing and blowing in usually gives more for the money.

Will blown-in insulation settle?

A little. We blow to the settled depth needed for the target R-value.

Does cellulose attract mice?

It is treated for pests, but rodents nest in any insulation if they can get in. Close entry points first.

How long does blown-in take?

Most attics take a day, including sealing.

Can blown-in go over old fiberglass batts?

Yes, if the batts are dry and clean.

Is blown-in good for walls?

Dense-pack cellulose is a good retrofit for closed walls. Loose blowing into walls can settle, so it must be packed.

Insulation Removal Questions

Does wet insulation need to be replaced?

Usually. Wet fiberglass and cellulose lose much of their R-value and hold moisture against framing.

How long does removal take?

Most attics take a day to clear; reinsulating may take another day.

Can rodent-fouled insulation stay?

It is better removed, with entry points closed first.

Can you remove just part of an attic?

Yes. Damaged sections can be removed and replaced if the rest is dry and clean.

Do you haul the old insulation away?

Yes, removal includes bagging or vacuuming and hauling it off.

Can you remove spray foam?

Yes, by cutting and scraping. It is slower and costs more than loose fill.
