Steel Sweats

Pole barn and farm building insulation is a big part of what we do in Cullman County. Steel buildings are everywhere here: pole barns, equipment sheds, hay barns, shops and poultry houses. Bare steel heats up in the sun and cools fast at night, and whenever humid air touches cold steel it condenses and drips onto equipment, feed, hay, or whatever is below.

Why closed-cell foam

Closed-cell spray foam bonds to clean steel, seals seams and fastener holes, and puts an insulating, vapor-tight layer between the steel and the air. HomeGuide rates it at R-5 to R-7 per inch. It does not hold water and adds some rigidity. A thin coat stops drip; a thicker coat insulates a shop you plan to heat or cool.

Sizing to the use

A hay barn or equipment shed may only need enough foam to stop condensation. A shop with a woodstove or a mini-split, or a building you want to keep cool in summer, needs more. Poultry houses have their own ventilation and equipment requirements; we work with what your integrator or grower specs call for and write the thickness on the quote.

Getting the building ready

Steel has to be clean and dry for foam to bond. Old faced batts with torn vapor retarder, bird nests and loose debris come out first. We look for roof leaks at fasteners and skylights, since foam will not fix them. Equipment that stays inside gets covered.

Ag buildings and codes

Agricultural buildings are often treated differently from homes under building codes, but a shop with living space, an office or a converted barn may not be. If you are converting a building, check with the county before work starts. Foam inside occupied space may also need a thermal barrier covering. Get a free estimate

Pole Barn & Farm Building Insulation Questions

How thick should foam be on a pole barn?

Often 1 inch or so of closed-cell stops drip; 2 to 3 inches or more for a shop you heat or cool. We write the thickness on the quote.

Can you foam over old insulation in a barn?

Not over loose or torn batts. Those come out so the foam bonds to steel.

Will foam keep birds and wasps out?

Sealing gaps at seams and eaves helps, but open doors and vents will still let them in.

Can you work around livestock or birds?

Foam needs the area cleared and ventilated. We plan timing with you, such as between flocks.

Does foam need a coating in a barn?

In some uses a protective or fire-rated coating is recommended or required. We tell you if your building needs one and include it as a separate line.
